For the Architecture Biennale in Venice, Caramel’s task was to design a ‘refugee camp’, using a vacant office building in Vienna. Safeguarding privacy, as in marking a place where someone can rest undisturbed by external influences, was the first and most important subject of “intervention”. Starting with a minimal design repertoire the central criterion was that all elements can be rapidly dismounted and easily reassembled in a different location.
The bachelor thesis (ISIA Urbino, supervisor: Luciano Perondi) investigates the problem of accessibility within the graphical representation of space and takes the form of a tactile artefact accessible to the blind and visually impaired. The goal is to make the geography of an area available both in economic as well as content terms, thanks to the combination of a low-cost printing technique and a specific representative approach. The project consists of a set of tactile maps and a research programme that documents the design process and the first phase of testing with blind people.
The project has been delineated upon the observation of methods of transport for migrants in the Mediterranean Sea. The trans-ship appears to be one of the most critical moments of the rescuing process, as very often migrants risk to fall off in the sea and sink. This project aims to propose a solution for this issue, allowing a safe trans-ship method. The idea proposes a plank designed for Coast Guard’s boats. It allows a safe and organised transfer of one person per time it requires simply one operator, instead of four, and it is made with cheap material that doesn’t require complex production

SteriPak is a kit that converts end of life gas cylinders into autoclaves for sterilising medical and baby equipment. Each kit costs less than 10USD. SteriPak empowers the community as the conversion itself provides work for locals that does not rely on specialised equipment. Many clinics in sub Saharan Africa are forced to reuse surgical equipment like scalpels and forceps due to their expense. SteriPak only requires water and a heat source to achieve safe, consistent sterilisation of this equipment to lower infant mortality rates and increase overall quality of life.
