HIV is surrounded by a lot of rumors and misinformation. Hundreds of teens in the Global become infected with HIV every year through unprotected sex or needle sharing. A much smaller number of teens with HIV were born to mothers who were infected. Today, there is hope that people living with HIV may never even become sick, just like there's no cure for viruses like colds and the flu. People living with the virus have to be extra careful not to take risks (like having unprotected sex) that could expose others to HIV.
Door Stops is a collaboration between designers, artists, riders and community residents to fill neglected public spaces, like transit stops and vacant lots, with seating opportunities to make the city a more pleasant place to be. Designed to provide a safer and aesthetically pleasing alternative to that which currently exists, the units are infused with large displays of public art commissioned from local artists, making for an easily identifiable, safe and pleasant waiting area for riders.
The Child Health and Vaccination Information System uses symbols, color-coding and wearable reminders to aid in the process of vaccination. It incorporates a double-sided health card with detachable bracelets for the child and a wearable hanging pouch to protect the card. The design works as an integrated information system to provide healthworkers and families, regardless of their literacy level, with a single source of information on a child’s age, vaccination periods and status, follow up dates for vaccination along with mapping a child’s growth and basics for nutrition in children.
Calientamigos allows impoverished families living without hot running water to heat and pressurize water for bathing, cooking and cleaning. The system is comprised of three modular components: a portable electric water heater; a foot pump that pressurizes the warm water; and a multi-purpose faucet head. It heats water more quickly, at a lower cost than existing methods, is more affordable than existing market options and more accessible than installing a gravity-fed water system. “Many countries have begun to implement policies to encourage walking as an important mode of transport. Pedestrian risk is increased when roadway design fail to plan for and provide traffic control mechanisms that separate pedestrians from vehicles. Traffic crashes in general are estimated to cost between 1 and 2% of gross national product” (WHO). Don Luis is a 3D traffic signal that binds to a yellow 2D line painted on the sidewalk to avoid the pedestrian cross the street at a different place to zebra. Designed with a sociocultural analysis and not merely from aesthetic guidelines.
Design for a social enterprise in Phnom Penh (Alma Café) which helps the needy through the Buckets of Love campaign. By donating a small sum, a pail containing food, oil, necessities is donated to the needy villagers who need it. Share the gift of love. Here the idea was simple, featuring the buckets full of graphic hearts that depict love. By portraying it pouring out, it signifies showering the needy with the well needed love. The bucket carries a smiley face that lights up not only the receiver but the sender as well. A little gesture of love goes a long way.
